The house sits on the low limestone shelf of the Plemmirio marine reserve, on the stretch where the coast stops being a beach and becomes rock, salt and open water. There is no road between the terrace and the sea. You go down four steps and you are in it.

Inside it is cool and plain in the way the good Sicilian houses are: white walls, dark shutters, terracotta underfoot, and a kitchen built to feed eight people who came back late from the beach and are hungrier than they planned. The long table outside is where the week actually happens.

Syracuse is fifteen minutes north. Ortigia — the old island quarter, the fish market, the Duomo square that looks staged and isn't — is close enough that you can go in for dinner without making a plan of it. Noto and the baroque towns are half an hour inland.

We inspect this house every season. The owners live on the island and are usually the ones who hand over the keys.

Getting there

Catania Fontanarossa is the nearest airport, an hour by road. We arrange transfers as a matter of course — the driver meets you inside the terminal, not in the car park. Comiso is a quieter alternative at ninety minutes, useful in August.

You will want a car for the week. We can have one waiting at the villa rather than at the airport if you would rather not drive on arrival day.

Stayed here
We swam before breakfast every single morning. Nobody wanted to leave.
